SPRINGFIELD -- City officials invite the public to a reception for retiring City Manager Bob Cumley from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, May 29, in the Busch Building Lobby. A short program will begin about 4:15 p.m.
Cumley will retire on May 31 after 35 years of working for the City. He started in 1972 as personnel director and has since served as assistant city manager and deputy city manager before becoming city manager in April 2006.
The Missouri City Manager’s Association honored Cumley with the Jay T. Bell Award at its annual meeting this month in Branson. The award is the highest distinction presented by the MCMA.
Cumley also was honored earlier in his career with the first Outstanding Assistant City Manager Award presented by the Missouri Municipal League.
Cumley is certified as a Credentialed Manager by the International City Manager’s Association and has taught public administration at Missouri State University, Drury University, Webster University, and Southwest Baptist University.
The City Council hired a national firm, Arcus Public, to conduct the search for the new city manager. Arcus opened the job search this month and expects to have an initial list of qualified candidates within about 45 days of when the search opened.
Deputy City Manager Evelyn Honea will serve as interim city manager beginning June 1.
