Governor salutes Vietnam veterans for their serviceby David Catanese, KY3 News
FOR VETERANS OF OUR NATION'S LONGEST WAR . . .
A FEW SIMPLE WORDS. A FIRM SALUTE AND A KEEPSAKE MEDALLION, HELPS TO MAKE UP FOR A 30-YEAR SILENCE. The way these veterans were treated was indeed a national disgrace, that we should make sure never happens again. It's just something that we never expected it. I never did. WHEN WILLIAM PALMER LEFT FOR VIETNAM IN 1971, THE GOVERNOR WHO IS NOW HONORING HIM WAS JUST A YEAR OLD. MANY OF THOSE WHO SERVED KEEP THEIR BATTLES TO THEMSELVES. PALMER DOESN'T EVEN LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE INJURIES THAT LANDED HIM IN A WHEELCHAIR. I'm just gonna say 10 bullets too short or too long. Whatever the word is. BUT WHEN HE ARRIVED HOME, HE DOES RECALL THE DISDAIN HE MET. Even the veterans that were coming home were against the war. WHETHER IT WAS CONTEMPT OR AMBIVALENCE, THERE WAS NO HEROIC HOMECOMING FOR THE VETERANS OF VIETNAM. I thought at the time it was a ... What's the word, punishment, for what we did in Vietnam. There's thing I did in Vietnam that I'm not happy about. Congrats bro BUT THIS CEREMONY HELPS MOVE PAST THE JUDGMENT . . . BECAUSE WHILE IT'S TOUGH TO HEAL THE RAW WOUNDS OF THE PAST, IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO SAY THANK YOU . . . Not just long overdue, it's just a very beautiful thing for them to do it.
