JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A state audit is critical of the way a deputy state treasurer accounted for the time he spent working on Treasurer Sarah Steelman's campaign for governor. The report released Wednesday by Democratic Auditor Susan Montee takes issue with the payroll records of Steelman’s deputy, Doug Gaston.
It notes Gaston didn’t submit any state time sheets from late January until April, when he was working on Steelman's campaign. He then filed time sheets in mid-April to show he took 225 hours of vacation time and 48 hours of sick leave.
The auditor says Gaston's adjustments appear to have been prompted partly by reporters’ inquiries about whether he was working for Steelman's campaign while on state time.
