SPRINGFIELD -- U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill was here on Saturday morning to host a clinic on ways to avoid foreclosures.
Ten years ago, McCaskill said, there wwere 154 foreclosures in Greene County. By the end of this year, there could be 1,000, thanks to sub-prime mortgages that now require borrowers to pay more than they can afford.
The clinic was to tell homeowners to be proactive if faced with a crisis -- to reach out to the lender and credit counselors or look at refinancing.
McCaskill also said there's an effort underway to help this mortgage crisis.
"We are trying to provide some money from Washington though Community Block Grants that will allow some relief on the level of interest rates that are coming into play that are making it so difficult for these people," she said.
