Springfield School District officials broke ground on Wednesday afternoon for a new Sherwood Elementary School in the southwest part of the district. The school will be just south of Horton Smith Golf Course and the Ozark Greenways Trail along Golden Avenue.

The district plans to put up to 450 students in the school, which will replace the present Sherwood Elementary School on Scenic Avenue at Sunshine Street. The district said the larger school should relieve crowding in nearby schools when it opens in August 2015.  Voters in the school district approved a bond issue for the school and other construction projects in 2013.

Something different about the new school is that part of the building will be a unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield. That organization raised $1.8 million for a 5,500-square-foot club, which will also share the school’s gym, cafeteria, tech lab, library, restrooms, art room and other areas. Three Sertoma clubs pledged the first $500,000 toward the project, which will called the Sertoma Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield.
