Firefall -- southwest Missouri's second-biggest annual event -- is Saturday

By Gene Hartley

SPRINGFIELD -- The Springfield-Greene County Parks Department expects 60,000 to 70,000 people will attend Firefall on Saturday. The attendance makes the pre-Independence Day celebration the second best-attended event in southwest Missouri each year, behind only I Love America, James River Assembly of God Church's evangelistic and patriotic event.

Because of budget cuts that reduced the city's support of the Parks Department, it could be the last year for Firefall without additional corporate support. Firefall started in 1982.

Firefall is on the north side of the Springfield-Branson National Airport. Gates open at noon and music starts at 1:20.

The event concludes around 10 after choreographed fireworks accompanied by live music from the Springfield Symphony.

The cost to park is $10 for cars/pickups/vans, $20 for RVs, and $4 for motocycles. City Utilities of Springfield will provide shuttles from the Missouri Entertainment and Events Center (formerly Ozark Empire Fair grounds). The buses leave every 15 minutes between 4 and 8 p.m., and will return riders at the conclusion of the event.

The shuttle service fee is: Regular bus fare plus $2.00 collected at the event site. Regular bus fare is: adults (ages 19-64) - $1 each way; youth (ages 5-18) – 75 cents each way; senior citizens (ages 65 and older) and disabled people – 50 cents each way. Bus passes and/or tickets will be accepted. Ages 4 and under are free.

People using the shuttle buses should enter the fairgrounds through gate 5 on Norton Road between Broadway Avenue and Kansas Expressway. For more information about the shuttle service, call the CU Transit office at (417) 831-8782.
