Lake of the Ozarks water could harm swimmers

By Gene Hartley

LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. -- With the Independence Day weekend coming up, state officials urge swimmers to take precautions. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources says five out of 53 water samples taken from Lake of the Ozarks show elevated levels of E. coli bacteria.

Water from one cove was 12 times the standard for safe swimming. Testers took the samples on June 16.

DNR will investigate the possible causes of the bacterial contamination. It’s up to individuals, however, to decide whether to get in the water. DNR spokesman Larry Archer says people should be careful not to swallow the water.
