SPRINGFIELD -- For the first time in a decade, AAA predicts fewer people will travel this Independence Day holiday weekend than the same weekend last year. About one in eight Americans likely will travel this weekend, but it obviously costs more this year to do it.

Gas prices hit a new record high in Springfield on Wednesday, with most stations charging $3.85 for a gallon of regular unleaded. AAA says more than 40 million people will travel this weekend; that's half a million fewer than last year.
