SPRINGFIELD -- City police are continuing to investigate the fatal motorcycle crash that occurred about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. An officer says Curt Russell, 30, of Battlefield sped away after the officer tried to stop him for not having a license plate.
Police said Thursday that Russell was on a stolen motorcycle, a 1998 Honda CBR 600 Sport. The owner reported it stolen on June 14 from a place in south Springfield.
Russell was westbound on Mount Vernon Street when the officer tried to stop him. He sped through a flashing red light at Scenic Avenue, lost control and hit a concrete culvert. Police said Thursday that they believe he was going more than 100mph before the crash.
Part of the investigation will include toxicology tests after the autopsy. Those tests could take a few weeks.
