SPRINGFIELD -- Severe storms brought serious lightning that left parts of the city and surrounding areas in the dark on Wednesday morning. About 11:30, City Utilities of Springfield reported 600 of its 107,000 customers were still out of power.

At the height of the outages, about 2,500 customers reported they lost service. About 9 a.m., 1,200 customers had no service.

The worst of the storm rolled in around 7 a.m. At 7:30, the first reports of outages came into CU. Four main power feeders around the city were out for a time but they were back up and running after just a few minutes.

For the second day in a row, power went out to the government area around Boonville Avenue at Central Street. Service was out for a short time at city and county buildings on Wednesday. On Tuesday afternoon, Springfield and Greene County officials sent many employees home early after power went out at those buildings, including the courts building.

To report a CU outage, call 1-888-863-9001 and follow the automated instructions.

Utility crews from other companies and co-ops also worked to restore power to more than 100 customers in Hickory and northern Polk counties on Wednesday morning. Empire Electric had customers in and around Wheatland, Hermitage, Weaubleau, Humansville and Flemington in the dark. Earlier, customers in Bolivar and Strafford also dealt with power outages.
