SPRINGFIELD -- A debate between the top two Republican candidates for Missouri governor got a little testy on Wednesday night at KY3’s studio. U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof and State Treasurer Sarah Steelman sparred over fiscal responsibility, stem cell research and ethanol.
Steelman cast Hulshof as a big-spending congressman. Hulshof fought back by questioning some of Steelman's votes when she was in the state Senate.
Hulshof claimed Steelman was buying into the spin from "big oil" by pushing for a repeal of Missouri's ethanol mandate. Steelman contends the corn-based fuel drives up the cost of food while Hulshof contends it lowers gasoline prices.
Each candidate questioned the other's resolve against embryonic stem cell research.
The winner of the Republican primary election on Aug. 5 likely will face Democratic Attorney General Jay Nixon in the general election in November.
