Utility project will close National Avenue in Springfield on Friday evening

SPRINGFIELD -- National Avenue at Elm Street will be closed to all through traffic beginning at 7 p.m. Friday for installation of stormwater pipe crossings on National Avenue that are part of a major stormwater project in the area.

National Avenue traffic will be detoured to John Q. Hammons Parkway via Cherry Street on the south and Walnut Street on the north.

The National at Elm intersection will be reopened to traffic by 6 a.m. on Monday. Motorists should use caution as the traffic signal will not be turned on to normal operation until Thursday, July 31.

From July 28 to July 31, the intersection will be a controlled as a two-way stop with traffic on Elm required to stop with National traffic given the right-of-way.

This schedule is weather permitting.
