Berryville mayor pleads guilty for DWI and drug possession

By Gene Hartley

EUREKA SPRINGS, Ark. -- The mayor of Berryville will serve no jail time after he's sentenced next week for drunken driving and having marijuana in his pickup. The Carroll County News reports Tim McKinney will pay $1,460 in fines and court costs in exchange for a guilty plea last Friday.

McKinney has been mayor for 17 years. Police arrested him in March and prosecutors charged him with driving while intoxicated, speeding and possession of a controlled substance.

McKinney said the small amount of marijuana that police found during the traffic stop was not his. He worked out a plea agreement with prosecutors for the fines and dismissal of the speeding charge.

District Judge Marianne McBeth accepted the plea agreement and noted it’s similar to what other people with similar charges have negotiated. McKinney will be on probation for a year.
