SPRINGFIELD -- Shootings are a fairly common occurrence in bigger cities like St Louis and Kansas City than they are here. However, they've been much more common here lately.

Springfield police aren't calling it a trend just yet but they do call it "alarming." The growing number of shootings includes a deadly shooting early Thursday.

"I got a phone call from his girlfriend telling me this morning. They were still at the scene,” said Michelene Khalid.

The latest shooting victim was Khalid's little brother, Raymond Khalid, 20. Springfield police found him dead at an apartment complex on Delaware Avenue north of Kearney Street about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

This is at least the fourth report of gunfire his week, all within the city limits.

"I heard what sounded like firecrackers going off in the front yard and I looked out and saw a girl over here standing in her yard, and I went back inside, then heard it again, came outside, and saw a car speeding off,” said Tamara Ogburn.

Police say, on South Link Avenue on Monday afternoon, people in two cars were shooting at each other. Ogburn says her son and another baby are outside all the time, and are thankful they weren't caught in the middle of it.

"A lot of kids in the neighborhood play outside, and to know that gunfire and that kind of thing is going on around here, it's pretty scary,” she said.

"It seems like a really quiet, nice area. It’s weird for something like that to happen,” said Denise Ausmus, who lives near Chestnut Expressway at Cedarbrook Avenue.

Police say, early Saturday morning in that area, a guy walking down the street got into an argument with a person driving down the road. It also ended in gunfire.

"They started shooting and, by the time he got back to his apartment, he realized he had been shot in the leg,” said Officer Grant Story, a spokesman for the police department.

Another shooting was on North Sherman Avenue on Tuesday. Police arrived to see a sport utility vehicle speed away. By the time they caught up with it, the shooter was gone.

"The tie that binds is these people that are involved are not willing to discuss with us, to cooperate with us,” said Story.

That's what's complicating police investigations, a lack of cooperating witnesses. Police say there are probably even more shootings that take place that never get reported to them.

Story says there is no evidence that points to the shootings being related to gangs and, since they are happening all over the place, it doesn't appear to be over gang turf.
