Gustav's rain moves out of the Ozarks after record downpours

The rain and flash flood watches and warnings ended Thursday after remnants from Hurricane Gustav dumped rain in much of Missouri and Arkansas this week. Some central parts of Missouri got as much as 6 inches of rain. Parts of Arkansas got nearly 12 inches.

Springfield got a record 2.75 inches on rain on Wednesday, the most ever for Sept. 3, breaking a record of 1.38 inches set in 1970. Joplin recorded 2.73 inches, breaking a record of 2.24 inches, also set in 1970. West Plains got 3.4 inches on Wednesday, breaking a record for the date of 3.02 inches set in 1988. Vichy, just north of Rolla, got 1.31 inches, which was not a record for the date.

In northwest Arkansas, a weather station in Boxley, near the Buffalo River in Newton County, received 6.72 inches of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 7 a.m. Thursday. The National Weather Service says Harrison got 3.97 inches in the same period.
