LEBANON, Mo. -- Law enforcement officers are investigating a deadly car chase. Camden County sheriff's deputies say the driver of a van led police on a chase on Missouri 5 on Thursday night from Decaturville before crashing through the front of Morgan Music store here.

The van then burst into flames and the driver died at the scene. Police don't know why the drvier fled from them in the first place.

POWELL, Mo. -- A man from Rocky Comfort died after a crash in McDonald County. Troopers say Paul Shearer's pickup ran off Highway E just south of Powell and hit a tree on Thursday afternoon. Shearer was 35.

SPRINGFIELD -- A former teacher and childcare supervisor accused of having sex with a boy whom she used to babysit is scheduled to make her first court appearance on Friday. Laura Kirkland, 25, was a fifth grade teacher at Christian School of Springfield.

Kirkland faces two counts of statutory sodomy and one count of statutory rape. Investigators believe the crimes happened over a two-year period that started when the victim was 8 years old.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- John McCain's message in his acceptance speech on Thursday night is resonating with Missouri Republicans at the party's convention. State Rep. Jason Brown, R-Platte City, said McCain is the right man at this time in history to lead the nation. State Rep. Ron Richard, R-Joplin, says he believes McCain will fight "the animosity of politics."

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Utility crews across Arkansas say it could be the end of the weekend before everyone has power again. The remnants of Hurricane Gustav knocked out electricity to about 140,000 homes and businesses, but workers have made steady progress to restore service.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The state Democratic Party is poised to name a replacement for its late chairman, Bill Gwatney, who was shot and killed last month. Party officials say an announcement could come as early as Friday.
