With gas prices taking a bigger bite out of drivers' budgets, more Missourians are sharing the ride. The Missouri Department of Transportation says usage of commuter lots increased 21% from February to May. Carpoolers say the main reason is to save gas.

While usage of commuter lots is up around the state, it did stay constant in Springfield. MoDot says that may be because gas prices around the Ozarks have dropped, or more people might have been on vacation when the count was conducted.

The count of cars at commuter lots happened on one day in February, one in May and one in August.
