SPRINGFIELD – A sign of the political times is the disappearance of campaign signs from yards. Thieves are targeting both sides of the political aisle.
"Why did you do that?” asked Donna Herbert, a supporter of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
That's the question Herbert would like to ask of the culprit who swiped her McCain presidential sign. It wasn't even up a week before it disappeared.
"I have a right to have that sign in my yard,” said Herbert.
Her neighbor's yard sign didn't fare very well either.
"I think everybody has a right to vote for who they want to and, like (husband) Bill said, we didn't bother anybody else's sign,” said Paula Evans, a McCain supporter.
McCain supporters are not the only ones targeted. So too are Obama’s proponents. Last month, Jean Lichlyter noticed someone had plucked her Obama sign from her yard. After driving around the neighborhood, she saw other Obama signs also disappeared.
"This is just really pathetic because this isn't the way to run elections; taking someone's sign isn't going to do anything about which way you vote,” said Lichlyter.
Lichlyter still has an Obama poster safely displayed in her front window. Bill and Paula Evans thought about putting a McCain sign in their window but they've decided to get a new yard sign and put it closer to their home.
"Bigger and better,” laughed Paula Evans.
Herbert replaced her McCain sign and she glued it to the frame to try to stop it from being ripped off.
"So if they take it, their hands will be stuck to that sign, believe me,” she said.
Although the signs may not be expensive, a spokesman for the Springfield Police Department warns it is still a crime to steal them.
