VAN BUREN, Mo. -- Carter County Sheriff Greg Melton, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot last month, was still on the ballot on Tuesday. His opponent, Republican Tommy Adams, won the election by two votes and will take office on Jan. 1.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has not ruled whether Melton died from suicide or an accidental shooting. His son found his body in a shed behind the family's home in Grandin.
