CARTHAGE, Mo. (AP) -- Investigators say they've reduced the number of suspects in the slaying of an elderly couple near Carthage to five. Jasper County Sheriff's Cpl. Brandi Richardson said they're checking alibis and awaiting DNA test results in their search for the killer of Robert Sheldon and his wife, Ellen, at their home on Oct. 12.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Governor-elect Jay Nixon likely will announce who will lead his transition team on Friday. Nixon has scheduled a 10:30 a.m. news conference to disclose his choice to head the transition from the Matt Blunt administration to his own. Nixon easily defeated Republican Kenny Hulshof on Tuesday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Early voting proved popular around the country this year, and Missouri's top election official wants the Show-Me State to follow suit. Secretary of State Robin Carnahan said Thursday that she'll ask the Legislature next year to adopt early voting. Nationwide, about one-third of voters cast ballots before Tuesday, resulting in shorter lines and quicker vote counts.

MIAMI (AP) - A hurricane watch has been issued for parts of Cuba as Paloma continues barreling toward the Cayman Islands. Watches have been issued for the provinces of Sancti Spiritus, Ciego de Avila, Camaguey, Las Tunas and Granma.

A hurricane warning remains in effect for the Cayman Islands, and the Category 1 storm is expected to pass near there late Friday or early Saturday. At 4 a.m. EST, Paloma was about 85 miles south-southwest of Grand Cayman. The storm is expected to keep gaining momentum as it moves across the Caribbean. It could become a Category 2 hurricane later Friday and may reach Category 3 intensity by Saturday.

The storm's winds are reaching 80 mph. Paloma is moving to the north at 8 mph and is expected to turn to the northeast late Friday.

Springfield will honor veterans on Saturday morning. The annual parade will begin at 11 on Commercial Street at Benton Avenue. It will travel west on commercial, then south on Boonville Avenue and east on Central Street.
