LICKING, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Corrections says an inmate from Mexico died on Monday after he was taken to the hospital in Houston. Mark Lewis, 43, was serving a 30-year (life) prison sentence.
The department didn't publicize Lewis' death until after it notified his family. Investigators hope an autopsy will tell them more about why Lewis died.
An Audrain County jury convicted Lewis of first-degree child molestation in January 2005. A judge sentenced him as a prior and persistent offender, which means he would have had to serve at least 80 percent of the prison sentence. Lewis unsuccessfully appealed his conviction.
