SPRINGFIELD – Here’s a warning for travelers over Thanksgiving: don't pack much. Cash-conscious fliers are only packing the basics to avoid, in some instances, paying huge baggage fees.

Baggage fees can really add up, especially this time of year when people pack presents. We went around to all five carriers that use Springfield-Branson National Airport to see which ones have cheaper baggage fees. We found out, if you're checking more than one 50-pound bag, you should be prepared to pay a hefty price.

Allegiant, American, United, Northwest and Delta -- all fly in and out of Springfield and all charge baggage fees. For the majority of these airlines, it's $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for the second -- each way.

Allegiant is the cheapest, charging $15 for both the first and second bag if you buy when you book your ticket. If you buy at check-in, the cost goes up.

If you're checking more than two bags, you'll shell out the big bucks -- anywhere from $100 to $200 more per bag. You could end up paying triple, not only for the additional luggage but also if it's overweight and oversize.

All these extra fees have a lot of passengers rethinking the way they pack.

“The fees were outrageous, so we decided we're going to have to cram everything into carry-ons, so we just started looking for luggage that was carry-on size and that would fit everything,” said Cristen Carlon of Savannah, Ga.

“More people will do more carry-on because of the fact they don't want to pay the fee,” said Carlene Raynaud of Waco, Texas.
