WEST PLAINS, Mo. -- Investigators believe two brothers murdered a man whose body was found in a burned out building last Saturday. Jonnathan Graven, 31, and Jared "Skip" Graven, 23, both of West Plains are charged with first-degree murder, arson, tampering with a motor vehicle, and abandonment of a corpse.
Firefighters found the body of Ricky Johnson, 22, of Pottersville after putting out a fire in the detached garage of a home at 2891 County Road 6420, just west of West Plains. No one was living in the home because it was being remodeled.
Late Tuesday night, Sheriff Robbie Crites said in a news release, the West Plains/Howell County SWAT served a search warrant at the Gravens' home at 3823 County Road 6340. No one was home but investigators scoured the scene for evidence about Johnson's murder.
"Investigators discovered what appeared to be new linoleum on the floor as well as fresh paint on the walls in some parts of the residence. Several items were discovered and seized as evidence," said Crites.
On Wednesday morning, officers arrested the Gravens and two others for questioning. All four were in a motel room in Thayer. Crites says detectives seized more items after getting search warrants for the motel room and two vehicles. After questioning, officers released the two people who were with the Gravens.
The Gravens are in the Howell County jail in lieu of $1 million each. Crites says they also are being held with no bond for suspected parole violations.
Crites says the investigation involved the Howell County Sheriff’s Department, the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the South-Central Drug Task Force, the West Plains Police Department, the West Plains/Howell County SWAT, the Thayer Police Department, the Oregon County Sheriff’s Department, and the Missouri Department of Conservation.
