SPJRINGFIELD -- Firefighters say old wiring is to blame for an apartment fire early on Tuesday morning. The fire broke out at about 4:30 in the 800 block of South Campbell Avenue, near Grand Street.

Five people were in the building, including a baby, but all were able to get out safely after smoke alarms went off. Damage is estimated to be about $40,000.

The American Red Cross' Greater Ozarks Chapter sent a disaster relief team to the scene. The Red Cross says four apartments were affected by fire, smoke and water. It helped seven people in those apartments with emergency shelter, food, clothing and medicine. One unit had a family of 4, including a 1-year-old child. The other units were occupied by one person.
