MOUNT VERNON, Mo. -- Local and state officials celebrated the beginning of a construction project that should relieve congestion on Missouri 39 at Interstate 44. A groundbreaking ceremony was Monday afternoon.
The project includes a new five-lane bridge over the interstate with additional traffic signals.
The city says the new interchange is vital to the economic welfare of local businesses that depend on easy accessibility from the interstate.
Missouri lawmakers helped secure $4 million in federal money to help build the interchange. The Missouri Department of Transportation plans for construction to be done by the end of next year.
