LEBANON, Mo. -- Laclede County Sheriff Richard Wrinkle says the woman whose body was found encased in concrete last month was Sharon Sabla, 57, of Lebanon. Wrinkle announced at a news conference on Thursday morning that Horst Sabla, 54, Sharon Sabla’s husband, is charged for her murder after admitting to detectives that he did it.

Wrinkle said a friend of Sharon Sabla filed a missing persons report on her a few days ago. Detectives tracked down her daughter and used the daughter's DNA to identify the body on Wednesday.

After Sharon's identification was confirmed, six officers went down Missouri 64, northwest of Lebanon, to arrest Sabla at a recreational vehicle park where he was living. Concerned for safety, they decided to not apprehend him at home. They pulled him over on the highway and he surrendered peacefully and admitted to everything.

“As for the personal items, we'll keep those because, despite making an arrest, there’s more investigating to do,” said Sgt. Jason Clark of the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Neighbors of Horst Sabla at the RV Park say he is a nice person who is always willing to help out. But, they added, they didn’t know he had a wife. Sabla had been staying at the RV Park for roughly three months; he told detectives that Sharon's death happened four months ago.

Wrinkle says detectives interviewed Horst Sabla on Wednesday and he admitted he shot his wife in the back of the head at their home on Aug. 9. Wrinkle says that confession matched autopsy results.

Wrinkle says Sabla said he put the body in a black plastic tote box and kept it in their home. A few days later, Sabla told detectives, he filled the box with lime and concrete.

Sabla said he kept the body in the home for several weeks before dumping it next to Highway AA northwest of Lebanon, not far from the RV park between Lebanon and Bennett Springs State Park. Some hunters coming out of the woods spotted the body in the box on Nov. 15. Wrinkle says he doesn't know how long it was there.

Wrinkle said the investigation is continuing and might lead to more charges, such as abandonment of a corpse. He wouldn't talk about who might have helped Sabla move the box, which weighed 500 pounds. The sheriff wouldn't reveal what the motive for the murder might have been, if investigators know.

After the body was found, the sheriff's department appealed to news media around the country to run the story to try to generate tips on who the woman might be. Initially, Wrinkle said last month, he didn’t think the woman was from the Lebanon area. Investigators also thought the woman may have been between ages 30 and 40.

Sabla is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
