NEW YORK CITY -- A woman from the Ozarks who survived a skydiving accident three years ago talked about her life since then on NBC’s “Today” on Tuesday morning. Shayna West, a 24-year-old graduate of Ash Grove High School, learned after the accident that she was pregnant.
Conditions over Siloam Springs, Ark., on Oct. 9, 2005, were ideal for West's sixth skydiving jump. Her initial maneuvers looked perfect from the cockpit.
Within seconds, however, things went wrong. Her main parachute failed to open properly and she began spiraling out of control.
As West dropped straight towards a parking lot below, she reached for her emergency reserve parachute but that one failed too. She hit the pavement at 50 miles per hour.
Doctors called it a miracle that West survived. Among her injuries were multiple broken bones in her face and a broken leg and pelvis.
On Dec. 14, 2005, West appeared on "Today" and recalled being in the emergency room and finding out about a second miracle.
“They came in and they told me they had a positive pregnancy blood test and I was two weeks along,” she said.
West had no idea she was pregnant. In 2006, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Tanner.
Amazingly, just six weeks after Tanner was born, West went skydiving again. This time, it was a tandem jump.
“I faced my fear. I wasn't going to let it be something that always controlled me,” said West.
Since the accident, West has endured six surgeries to repair her cheekbone and eye sockets.
"You usually don't see people live from this type of thing, obviously,” said Dr. Randy Kienstra.
Doctors at St. John's hospital in Springfield donated their services, reconstructing one side of West's face, adding cheek implants and fixing her lower eyelids.
"She wanted to look as close to what she looked like before the accident as possible,” said Dr. Keith Laferriere.
Earlier this year, West took another trip to a hospital. This time, she welcomed Tanner's little sister, Bridget. It was more great news after a very long and extraordinary recovery.
