SPRINGFIELD -- A woman from the Fair Grove area is accused of trying to poison her husband about six months ago. Tonia Peterson, 40, is charged with first-degree assault.

Investigators believe Peterson poured an eye medication, Visine, into Cecil Peterson's tea. Greene County Sheriff's Department detectives say they were tipped off about it after she talked about it at work, and her co-workers turned her in.

In the probable cause statement used as the basis for the charge on Thursday, Detective Kenny Weatherford wrote that Peterson told him that she put a "half bottle of Visine in her husband's tea in attempt to kill him. She stated that she was told by a friend prior that Visine would kill him. She stated before she put the Visine in his drink she checked on the Internet where she found information that supported her friend's statement." She also thought this could go undetected in a toxicology test, a detective said in an interview on Thursday.

Peterson was in the Greene County jail on Thursday night in lieu of a $100,000 bond. If convicted, she could face a prison sentence between five and 15 years. The investigation is ongoing including the seizure of Tonia Peterson's computer, and whether a life insurance policy could be a compounding factor.
