United Way's 2-1-1 is similar to the information hotline 411 only operators are hearing from the hungry and homeless.

Operators are based in St. Louis and take calls from all over the State. People call up and explain what they need, then operators find an agency in their area who can help them.

"The call center gets over 10-thousand calls per month. It's been increasing a lot especially with people asking about help with utilities rent and mortgage and just wanting food," said Martha Love, United Way 211 representative.

The call is free but only works from land lines or AT&T cell phones.

If you don't have a phone but you have access to the internet, you can go on-line and type in your zip code and what kind of service you're looking for. http://www.211missouri.org/ .
