HARRISON, Ark. -- Utility companies in Arkansas and Missouri say the power outages are the worst in their memory. The area hardest hit by power outages is in and around Harrison.
Most of Harrison was dark on Wednesday. Only a couple of restaurants and businesses were open. A spokesman for Entergy says the rural areas of Boone County outside Harrison are nearly totally without power.
Power companies say it could take three weeks to restore power to all customers. The number of outages for various companies went up instead of down on Wednesday, in many cases, as the weight of the ice on the lines broke more equipment.
Gasoline stations in the Branson, Mo., area saw steady business from people in Arkansas who drove up to fill up their vehicles and gas cans for generators. Customers said it was faster to drive up to Missouri than wait in lines in Arkansas for the few stations that had power at their pumps.
