AVA, Mo. -- The supporting structure of Curtis Department Store sagged into the ceiling on Friday under the weight of snow and ice. The store is closed and employees are cautiously trying to remove merchandise in case the roof collapses.
Curtis Department Store carries men's, women's and children's clothing and shoes. It's a local company with other stores in Mountain View, Willow Springs and Gainesville.
The weight of snow and melting ice also caved in the Lakey And Lakey hay storage building in Douglas County.
Also Friday, snow and ice on the roof of the Wal-Mart store in Mountain Grove caused employees to evacuate it and close the store on Friday morning after the roof sagged. A Wal-Mart engineer and others inspected the building to make sure it's safe and it reopened in the afternoon.
The same problem happened Thursday at the Wal-Mart SuperCenter in Branson. After inspections by Wal-Mart structural engineers and city building inspectors, the store reopened on Friday morning. Engineers said the roof flexed as it's designed to do under the weight of ice and snow.
