SPRINGFIELD -- City police nabbed a man wanted on suspicion of raping a 9-year-old girl. Officers arrested Robert Langford, 27, on Saturday afternoon.

According to police, the child's mother returned to her home on East Pythian Street early Friday morning to find her daughter had reportedly been assaulted. Langford was babysitting the girl.

Police say Langford fled when he realized the mother found out about the rape.

Around 1 p.m. Saturday, an alert officer spotted Langford outside an apartment building on Walnut Street.

"He saw who he believed to be the suspect that we've been looking for for the past two days," said Springfield Police Lt. Kirk Manlove. "The suspect saw him about the same time and ran back into the apartment building."

Langford, who was arrested without incident, faces rape and sodomy charges. His bond is set at $500,000.
