HARRISON, Ark. -- Arkansas' tobacco tax increase is starting to register with nicotine addicts who are stocking up on cigarettes to satisfy their future cravings.
"It's been great; sales have increased a whole lot," said Judy Biggs, manager of Tobacco World.
At Tobacco World, people are buying them by the cartons.
"We got people ordering ten boxes to beat the price," said Biggs.
Store managers can't complain about the sweet sales but some smokers are fuming.
"What gets me, when I started smoking, it was promoted throughout the country," said longtime smoker Roger Lidey.
When Lidey started smoking, cigarettes cost just 25 cents per pack. He's been addicted for 52 years.
"I tried to quit so many times," said Lidey.
Lidey says he wishes tobacco was outlawed.
"It makes more sense than taxing the people that originally it was okay to smoke. You get people addicted then they tax the heck out of them," Lidey said.
A carton of Winston Ultra Lights, for example, right now in Missouri costs $27. In Arkansas it's $32. Come Sunday, it'll cost $40 for a carton in Arkansas.
"I'm not going to pay, you know $40 or $50 a carton for stuff I can get for $30," said Lidey.
A lot people are fired up about burning more money. They say they'll just cross the border.
"Most likely I'll go to Missouri to get my cigarettes," said smoker Anthony Domenico.
"I save money because the gas is also cheaper, so I get both at the same time," said Lidey.
But are they serious or are they just blowing smoke?
"Since we're so close to the border it does kind of worry us a little," said Biggs.
