JOPLIN, Mo. -- State Sen. Jack Goodman, R-Mt. Vernon, announced his candidacy for the U.S. House seat being vacated by Roy Blunt. Blunt, a Republican, is running for the U.S. Senate in 2010 instead of seeking re-election to District 7 congressional seat that he's held since 1997.

Goodman announced his candidacy on Friday morning in Joplin and then headed for similar news conferences in Mount Vernon, Springfield and Branson. The 35-year-old attorney has served in the state Legislature since 2003.

Auctioneer and former radio talk show host Billy Long of Springfield says he also plans to run for Blunt's seat. Other Republicans seriously considering the race include state Sen. Gary Nodler of Joplin, and Nixa Alderman Kevin Elmer.
