NTSB report on 'copter crash implicates broken tail rotor shaft

By Gene Hartley

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- National Transportation Safety Board report says tail rotor failure apparently caused a helicopter to crash and sink in the Lake of the Ozarks near Sunrise Beach last spring.  A 9-year-old boy drowned when the chopper went down, while four others on board managed to escape.

Eyewitnesses said the helicopter suddenly spun out of control and plunged into the water on May 25, the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. The NTSB says the tail rotor drive shaft broke just behind the cabin.

The NTSB's factual report is not the final word on the crash.   The agency hasn't released its probable cause report.
