BUFFALO, Mo. --The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating the case of a former Buffalo police officer who is accused of having sex with two underage girls. Jonathan Parmalee, 25, was charged last month with one count of forcible rape and one count of statutory rape.

A probable cause statement shows a 16-year-old girl said Parmalee forced her to have sexual intercourse last May at his home. The document also shows a woman said he had consensual sex with her at his home between March and August 2006, when she was under age 17.

Parmalee was a Buffalo police officer from July 1 to Oct. 27, 2008.

"He was wanting to learn; he'd ask a lot of questions,” said Buffalo Police Chief Sam Hartsell.

Hartsell says Parmalee was an inquisitive rookie on the force. But he also remembers why Parmalee left the force: rumors involving him with local teenage girls.

"He called me and I was asking him about these, and he said, ‘That's what I wanted to talk to you about.’ And considering the allegations, he thought it might be best if he resigned at that time,” the chief said.

Hartsell agreed.

"I know a person's innocent until proven guilty but the allegations, whether they are false or true, are just bad,” he said.

Parmalee worked for the Buffalo Police Department from July 1, 2008, until he resigned on Oct. 27, 2008.

He was in the Polk County jail on Wednesday in lieu of a $75,000 bond. He was held there instead of in the Dallas County jail for his own protection from inmates that he might have investigated.

If he's convicted, Parmalee could face a prison sentence of five to 30 years for forcible rape and up to seven years for statutory rape.
