SPRINGFIELD -- Interstate Bakeries Corporation said Tuesday that it will close its bakery here and another one in Columbus, Ohio. Between 80 and 100 employees will lose their jobs here and another 130 to 150 will lose their jobs in Ohio.
The bakery in Springfield is on Grant Avenue between Walnut and College avenues. Years ago, it was a Holsum bakery and had a unique animated sign that showed sliced bread falling out of a sack. Longtime restaurants also reminisce about the aroma of fresh baked bread that came from the plant.
A company news
release says "local market developments," including fewer sales, forced it to close the bakeries.
