Hartville teacher is accused of sexual contact with student

By Paula Dowler

HARTVILLE, Mo. -- A kindergarten teacher is charged with having sexual contact with a high school student and furnishing pornography to him. A detective says the investigation of Katherine Hicks of Niangua started last week after the student's mother complained to city police.

In the probable cause statement used as the basis of charges, the detective says the 17-year-old student says he and Hicks had a personal relationship that included kissing, him touching her breast, her touching his rear, and an exchange of nude pictures and "dirty messages" via cellular telephones. The student was in her classroom to be a tutor for the A+ Program, which requires high school students to tutor other students as one requirement to be eligible for a community college scholarship.

The detective says the student's mother filed a complaint with police after hearing reports of an inappropriate relationship between her son and Hicks. Police questioned several teachers and the high school principal, and brought Hicks in for questioning on Wednesday. The detective says she didn't admit anything except exchanging text messages. An officer arrested her after the interview.
