NIXA, Mo. -- A doctor with the Ozarks Community Hospital died in Mexico this week. Dr. William Campbell passed away while vacationing.
Campbell was swimming in the ocean when he became unconscious. His family says attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Ozarks Community Hospital says results from a medical exam to determine cause of death won't be available for several weeks. His body was cremated and his family brought the ashes back to Nixa. A source close to his family says they believe he was stung by a jellyfish.
Campbell practiced medicine in Nixa for more than 25 years. He was one of the physician owners of Ozarks Community Hospital (formerly Doctors Hospital in Springfield) as well as a family practice doctor in its clinic in Christian County.
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden death of Dr. Campbell. He will be truly missed by the entire Ozarks Community Hospital family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time,” said Carrie Richardson, Ozarks Community Hospital's director of communications said in a news release.
“The outpouring of community support for this beloved physician has been touching to family, friends and co-workers. Dr. Campbell was a wonderful physician, caring person and invaluable community leader. He will be truly missed by the entire Ozarks Community Hospital family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time,” said Paul Taylor, Ozarks Community Hospital chief executive officer, in another news release on Monday.
