POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. -- Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said President Obama and the Democratic Congress are creating the most radical, left-wing government in American history.
He made the comments in a question and answer session with College of the Ozarks students Tuesday afternoon.
Gingrich's talk wasn't all red-meat criticism of the party in power. He did offer some of his own ideas. But in his speech, the former Speaker painted a bleak picture because of bailouts, runaway spending and an overly activist government.
"Every young American ought to be calculating what this administration's going to cost them for an entire lifetime," Gingrich said.
He called the billion dollar bank bailouts, the trillion dollar stimulus package and a proposed $3.5 trillion dollar federal budget all part of "the most destructive agenda in modern history."
"During the period I was speaker, the U.S. government for four years, in total growth, was 2.9 percent percent a year. Under Bush, it was 6. Obama, this year, I think it will be 36 percent in one year. It is just literally irrational," Gingrich said.
President Obama asked the head of General Motors to step aside Monday so a new leader could offer a fresh path for the beleaguered company. But Gingrich called that move one of "grotesque arrogance."
"I'm very opposed to the President of the United States randomly deciding who heads corporations," Gingrich said.
He skewered Obama's plans to slice out tax deductions for those who give to charities, labeling it a cynical ploy.
"They want to cut out the tax breaks for charities deliberately because they want to weaken charities so that people will have to rely more on government," Gingrich said.
But Newt didn't focus all his fire on the Democrats.
He predicted the rise of a third party by 2012 if Republicans don't get their act together. And he acknowledged that most of the big financial problems the country currently faces began under the era of former President Bush.
"Remember, everything Obama's doing, Bush started last year. If you're going to talk about big spending, the mistakes of the Bush administration last year are fully as bad as the mistakes of Obama's first two, three months," he said.
