ROLLA, Mo. -- The Humane Society of Missouri and the Phelps County Sheriff's Department removed 68 dogs that they say were living in filthy conditions at an unlicensed breeding facility. Some of the dogs are pregnant.

The owner's name was not released. The dogs were removed Tuesday and taken to the Humane Society facility in St. Louis for care.

Humane Society officials say the dogs are a variety of breeds - miniature schnauzers, poodles, beagles, terriers. Many appeared to need veterinary care.

Officials say the dogs were cramped in inadequate cages. Some have paw and leg problems that appear to be caused by wire flooring in the cages.

Sheriff Rick Lisenbe says the dogs were in rabbit hutches and a garage. He says a deputy reported the breeder, leading to the raid.

A disposition hearing is scheduled for May 7 to determine the fate of the dogs.
