Jury convicts man for cocaine injection death in Nixa

By Brian Vandenberg

OZARK, Mo. -- A Christian County jury convicted Thomas Naumann on Friday evening for first-degree murder for the death of a former Macon County prosecuting attorney, David Masters. Prosecutors convinced the jury that the man from Nixa injected Masters with a lethal dose of cocaine in 2005 after a fight over rent money.

Naumann face a life prison sentence when he's sentenced in July by Circuit Judge John Moody of Mansfield. Christian County Prosecuting Attorney Ron Cleek sought a death sentence up until about April 1, when he waived that option.

Masters served two terms as a prosecuting attorney but his family said his life went into a downward spiral after he lost a re-election bid in 1998. He lost his law license and started using illegal drugs. He was living in Nixa with Naumann and Crystal Broyles.

The jury heard testimony during the trial that Masters was trying to move out but the other two were angry because they said he owed them money. A witness testified that he saw Masters tied to a chair in the home. A medical examiner said Masters' body had fatal levels on cocaine in it after it was found next to the James River west of Nixa.

Broyles pleaded guilty to second-degree murderfor Masters' death and received a 13-year prison sentence in 2006. Naumann's defense attorney, Dean Price of Springfield, argued that Broyles alone killed Masters.

Attorneys and the judge selected the jury on Monday and it heard testimony and legal arguments on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday before convicting Naumann late Friday. The trial paused on Wednesday because Price was ill.
