GALENA, Mo. -- Numerous law officers spent more than four hours on Monday evening trying to arrest a man who they say threatened a deputy.
Here's an edited news release from the Stone County Sheriff's Department:
Shortly after 6 p.m., a Stone County deputy was threatened with a weapon as he was serving civil papers at a home on Sycamore Ranch Road near Galena. As the deputy arrived at the home, a 58-year-old man came out of the home with a shotgun and threatened to shoot the deputy. When the deputy backed out of the driveway, the man got into his pickup and drove out to the road to try to ram the deputy’s vehicle.
Additional deputies went to the area along with Highway Patrol troopers and a negotiator from the Highway Patrol's Troop D headquarters in Springfield.
The man, who thought the deputy was there to evict him from his home, spoke to a Stone County sergeant by telephone but refused to come out of the home. During the conversation, he said he was not leaving and would shoot anyone who came on his property.
Spotters from the Stone County SERT team saw the man walking around the home carrying what appeared to be a shotgun. As time passed, deputies spoke with family members of the man, and none of them felt that he would cooperate with the deputies.
As the night set in, members of the Stone County SERT team with the help of the Nixa Police Department’s SERT team, surrounded the home. At approximately 10:30, the man came out of his home with a loaded 12-gauge shotgun and began walking out into the yard as if he was looking for someone. When he came into an area where several members of the SERT team were, they managed to take the man into custody without incident.
Officers took him to a hospital in Springfield for a mental evaluation. A probable cause statement along with deputies' reports were given to the Stone County prosecuting attorney on Tuesday for possible formal charges. Officers took numerous weapons and ammunitions from the home.
