GREENFIELD, Mo. -- A detective says a former Greenfield High School teacher admitted that her friendship with a student "turned into a sexual relationship." The Dade County prosecuting attorney charged Alison Peck, 23, of Mount Vernon with two counts of statutory rape on Thursday.

According to the probable cause statement used as the basis for the charges, the student, who is 16, said he started sending text messages to Peck last December. From there, he started going to her home, where he said he had sexual relations with her numerous times from January to March. Once or twice, the student told the detective, he and Peck drove to a rural place in Dade County and had sex in her car. The detective said he interviewed Peck last month and says she confirmed what the student said.
The investigation started several weeks ago after Sheriff Steven Stapp heard rumors that about the inappropriate contact. Stapp knows how rumors could spread but felt this case was
different. That's why he brought in the Highway Patrol.
“It seemed like the information we had was valid,” said Stapp.
“The district took immediate action; she was suspended,” said Greenfield School District Superintendent Cheryl Mack.
Administrative leave is a standard protocol at Greenfield when an allegation like this arises.
Mack says the district is trying to move on and leave this in its past.
“It’s traumatic; it's what every superintendent dreads,” she said.
Mack’s first year as superintendent at Greenfield will be memorable not for the numerous awards the students achieved but for the charges against the first-year music teacher.
“When you interview a candidate, you look for someone passionate and check references,” Mack said. “The district did everything possible to keep the children safe.”
Eventually, Peck resigned. Now the case is out of the school's hands. Mack says the district is focusing on the student's welfare.
“We are working with the family to give the boy whatever he needs,” she said.
A judge set her bond at $2,500. A deputy served her with the charges on Thursday but did not arrest her. If she's convicted, Peck could receive prison sentences as long as seven years on each of the two charges of statutory rape.
