BOWLING GREEN, Mo. -- A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 28 for a man from Springfield accused of killing his wife 17 years ago. Douglas Howery Sr., 57, is charged with first-degree murder for the death of Betty Ann Howery, who was 44 when she disappeared from the couple's rural farm near Annada in February 1992.

The investigation of the case was renewed when human bones were found in a septic tank in October at the farm, which is in Pike County near the Mississippi River about midway between Hannibal and St. Louis. The FBI used DNA tests to conclude the bones were those of Betty Ann Howery.

A judge set the preliminary hearing date during a hearing on Monday. Police arrested Douglas Howery at his home in Springfield after he was charged on May 7.
