SPRINGFIELD -- A former leader of Collins was released from the Farmington Correctional Center on Tuesday. A judge sentenced Allen Kauffman in January to four years in prison for sexual misconduct with a child, but agreed to review the sentence after 120 days.
Police in Newton County caught Kauffman in an Internet sting. They say he tried to arrange sex with a detective who was posing as a girl in November 2007.
Kauffman’s release on probation comes after completing four months in a sex offender assessment program. He’ll be on four years of probation.
Kauffman was chairman of the Board of Trustees of Collins, and also pastor of a church, when he was charged in Newton County in January 2008. Four months later, he was charged in Cole County for a similar online sting in March 2007.
Kauffman pleaded guilty in Cole County and received a sentence of five years of supervised probation and 100 hours of community service, as well as an order not to use the Internet. He also has to register with the St. Clair County sheriff as a sexual offender.
