SPRINGFIELD -- Two men are recovering from gunshot wounds that they suffered on Wednesday night. Police say one man, Jason Wade, 33, fired a gun inside a house at 1728 N. Washington Ave. after a fight. A bullet hit the other man, Shawn Turner, 33, in a hand. Turner lives at the home where the shooting occurred.
Wade tried to speed away, along with two men who were with him, but officers arrested him after a short vehicle and foot chase. Officers say Wade accidentally shot himself in the right thigh before he got out of the car.
Both men were taken to a hospital, treated and released. Police took Wade to the county jail.
On Thursday, prosecutors charged Wade with first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and armed criminal action. If convicted, he could receive prison sentences of 15 to 45 years for assault and burglary, plus three or more years for armed criminal action. He likely would receive the maximum penalty because of his criminal history. In asking for a $150,000 bond, prosecutors said Wade has 20 felony convictions.
According to the probable cause statement against Wade, police say Wade forced his way into Turner's home and pointed a handgun at Turner. Turner and Wade fought over the gun, leading to Turner being shot in the hand, shattering his bones and damaging tendons.
