SPRINGFIELD -- One after another, we've heard of entire towns canceling fireworks displays and Independence Day celebrations because of lack of revenue to pay for them. One major celebration is a go in Springfield, however.
James River Assembly of God's "I Love America" celebration is Friday on top of Springfield Underground at the northeast corner of U.S. 65 at Division Street (Highway YY). This celebration, which usually hosts 60,000 or more, will likely host even thousands more, possibly 100,000 to 120,000.
A few obvious differences separate this year's I Love America Celebration from those previous.
"This'll be the first year we have it on the 3rd, not the 4th,” said Kert Parsley, the director of “I Love America.”
So, as hundreds of volunteers prepared on Thursday to welcome thousands upon thousands, the change of date could make a difference in how many guests show.
"It's a work day, so we don't know what to expect,” said Parsley.
Those preparing to guide the crowds say they know what to expect: a huge turnout.
"We're expecting upwards of 100,000,” said Parsley.
Cancelled displays elsewhere have made this THE show in the area so, while traffic patterns from previous years haven't changed, officials want the droves to know where to drive.
The gates open at 11:00. Traffic direction begins around 1:00.
At 1:30, Division east of LeCompte Road will close. It’ll reopen at 5:00 -- one way, east of U.S. 65.
"Pay attention at 65 highway, because lots of cars will be entering and leaving those ramps,” said Springfield Police Sgt. Darrell Rader.
Traffic after the event--by around 10-- is what causes the most concern. That's when the ramps will be closed both directions at Division and Chestnut, and those heading northbound will not be able to exit at Kearney.
"We're asking people to be flexible, listen to law enforcement."
Law enforcement suggests those traveling in the area bring along some extra patience -- and something else.
"I'd suggest a full tank of gas."
