SPRINGFIELD -- More than a million fans registered online for a chance to attend Michael Jackson's memorial. A man from Springfield is one of only thousands selected to see the ceremony in Los Angeles.
Tom Garrett was running out of time on Monday, however. He had until 6:00 Monday evening to pick up his tickets in Los Angeles.
Garrett got the e-mail notification on Sunday night that he had been selected out of 1.6 million people who registered. He had to print off the vouchers before midnight, and did, and he started searching for an affordable flight.
Garrett's main reason for registering to go to the memorial was his 10-year-old daughter, Jeris, who is a big Michael Jackson fan. She's been filling her time with everything Michael Jackson lately -- the music, movies, and magazines. At first, she didn't believe the shocking news.
"I don't really believe my grandpa all the time, and he said that Michael Jackson had a heart attack, and I didn't believe him," said Jeris Jones.
"We thought it would be pretty interesting to be able to go out and take in the memorial service, and had not a clue that it would happen that fast; it's such short notice," said Garrett.
Garrett and Jeris were looking for any last-minute ways to get to L.A.'s Dodger Stadium before 6 Monday night but the tickets they've found so far are out of their price range.
