Judge reduces Naumann's murder conviction

By Gene Hartley

OZARK, Mo. -- Judge John Moody of Mansfield reduced Thomas Naumann's first-degree murder conviction to second-degree murder on Monday. A jury convicted Naumann on May 1 for the death of David Masters in 2005 in Nixa but the judge thinks the facts fit second-degree murder, not first-degree. His order doesn't elaborate.

Moody re-scheduled sentencing for Aug. 3 (it was set for Monday after the trial). Naumann now faces a prison sentence of 10 to 30 years (life) instead of life with no chance of parole.

Moody heard the case after Christian County Circuit Judge Mark Orr recused himself.
